Mangawhai Heads

On a hillside overlooking Mangawhai Heads sits a well crafted beach retreat, designed to seamlessly integrate into a steep section of native Mānuka.

For a couple of keen surfers, building their dream home with a view of the sea was a no brainer. Inspired by its surroundings and close connection to the natural environment this home conjures a beachy feel and relaxed vibes inside and out.

Orientated with its long face to the north-west, the house is able to capture the best of the panoramic views towards Tara Iti beach, while thoughtful design of the fenestration helps maintain privacy from it’s neighbours.

A single roof plane sits sympathetically with the slope of the hill, providing shelter for the stepped living spaces below.

A Mānuka clad path meanders up the hillside to the approach of this home, providing the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the outside world. Upon entry a modest kitchen of warm timber sits above the lofty living space, with thoughtfully framed views of the ocean below.

Meanwhile at the home’s highest point, secluded in the bush, the bedrooms are a peaceful retreat from the tumbling surf below.

A yoga studio / office protrudes out from the south east façade, capturing the outlook to Mangawhai heads in the distance.

A dark palette of natural timber cladding nestles the house into the surrounding native bush. While inside - light, warm timbers create inviting spaces of soft natural tones.

New Zealand timber and locally sourced natural materials will help this home to minimise its carbon footprint and impact on the environment.
