Hole in One
Nestled between the banks of the Manawatu River and the boundary of the Manawatu Golf Course lies Hole In One, a non-traditional home on the corner section on Fairway Grove.
The family’s love of fishing and travel mean that time at home is often limited to the working week, so this home was to be functional and low maintenance: lock up and leave, no weekends tending the garden and little time spent maintaining the building.

Designed around an internal courtyard with an Asado open fire, this home has a tough exterior and a warm, inviting interior. The kitchen, bedrooms and a fishing studio surround the courtyard, while an outdoor room between the pool and the courtyard allows the house to remain functional in even the worst of the weather.

Health, comfort, maintenance and running costs were big drivers for the design of this home. A central heating system utilising bulkhead heat pump units is paired with a separate ventilation system to ensure internal comfort and clean, healthy fresh air for the occupants, while ensuring moisture is managed and the wall construction remains dry and healthy.

Winner - HousingJury's comment: Located on a flat site in a pleasant Palmerston North subdivision, Hole in One assimilates with the surrounding homes, while its simple and unfussy form somehow raises it above them. A triumph of collaboration, the engaged and exacting clients are ecstatic about the resulting home, which provides incredibly well for their hobbies and living habits, while also incorporating passive solar measures. With an interior that feels serene, cosy, and cohesive, this is a well-designed, low maintenance, light and sunny home that will bring joy for many years to come.
