Rongopai Reno
Villa & Character Home Upgrade in Palmerston North
Rongopai Renovation is a thoughtful upgrade of a 1920s villa in Palmerston North, designed to improve layout, natural light, and everyday living. The project transforms a previously disconnected floorplan into a warm, functional home that balances heritage character with contemporary design.
1 / 7Reworking the Existing Home
The renovation reimagines a well built but inefficient layout into a calm retreat from busy work life. By effectively flipping the footprint, the design resolves a confused and disconnected arrangement and creates a clear, functional plan suited to contemporary living.
Kitchen, dining, and living spaces are brought together into a cohesive open plan layout, forming the social and functional heart of the home. This shift allows the house to work intuitively, improving both daily use and long term flexibility.
2 / 7Bringing Light and Warmth Into the Plan
A key focus of the renovation was improving access to natural light. Orientation is carefully considered, while openings and skylights are thoughtfully positioned to draw sunlight deep into the home, ensuring warmth and brightness are experienced throughout the day rather than confined to a single room.
The result is a noticeably lighter, more comfortable environment, better suited to both family life and quieter moments.
3 / 7Renovating a 1920s Villa
Like many villas, the original home had a series of separated rooms, limited connection between spaces, and uneven access to light. The design addresses these typical constraints while respecting the proportions and character that give the house its identity.
Original features are retained where possible and paired with contemporary additions and carefully detailed joinery. This allows old and new to sit comfortably together, creating a cohesive architectural language rather than a contrast between eras.
4 / 7Indoor Outdoor Connection
Indoor and outdoor spaces are linked at both ends of the house, connecting front and rear lawns and creating sheltered, private outdoor areas. These spaces respond to Palmerston North’s winds while taking advantage of sunlight, allowing the home to be used comfortably throughout the year.
5 / 7Spaces for Work, Rest and Retreat
The brief centred on work life balance, quiet moments, and space for books and retreat. Integrated shelving, reading nooks, and a small dedicated study provide areas for focus without overwhelming the home.
These moments create a sense of calm and make the house feel personal, not just functional.
6 / 7Functional Upgrades for Modern Living
The home remains a three bedroom dwelling, with improved spatial planning, strong storage, and well proportioned rooms throughout.
A new master suite includes considered wardrobing and an ensuite, while bathrooms are modernised to support both current use and future family needs. The renovation prioritises practical living without unnecessary complexity.
The result is a warm, light filled villa renovation that feels grounded in its history while confidently adapted for modern life. The home retains its character while offering the comfort, clarity, and ease expected of a contemporary family home.
