Ethiopian Orthodox Church
Currently on the drawing board.
This new Ethiopian Orthodox Church is envisioned as both a home and a place of gathering - where the Ethiopian community can feel connected to their roots and find peace in their faith. Set gently within the valley of Wainuiomata, it will provide a sanctuary for worship and a place of belonging for generations to come.
Inspired by great churches like the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, the design weaves Ethiopian architectural character with the warmth of Aotearoa’s craft.
The architecture reflects four guiding principles:
1 | Traditional Character: Expressed through classic Ethiopian forms, intricate carvings, and soaring ceilings.
2 | Built to Last: Strong, safe, and enduring, using contemporary methods and durable construction.
3 | Peaceful Interior: Interiors filled with soft light, calm spaces, and places for both private prayer and collective worship.
4 | Meaningful Details: Every element carries symbolic weight, with geometry and proportion guided by sacred numbers that enrich the design.
